WebRiver, in collaboration with The Galaxy Restaurant in Wadsworth, Ohio, has launched a mobile web application designed and developed specifically for the iPad and other touchscreen tablets.
The Interactive Wine App for the Galaxy Restaurant provides customers with a fun and engaging way to browse the wine menu and make drink selections. Galaxy Restaurant customers are handed an iPad with the Wine App, and the sleek, fluid interface provides an exciting and engaging way to experience the approximately 400 wines, drinks, and desserts available on the menu.
“Customers have been intrigued with this new way of browsing and learning about the wines we have available here at The Circle L Steakhouse and The Wine Room at The Galaxy Restaurant” says Sean Leatherman, restaurant owner. “The app has been well received. It gets customers talking about wine with our servers, and it shows our customers we are serious about wine.”
The Wine App presents customers with an option to browse wine by the glass, or by the bottle. By selecting one of the options, the app then presents the various red and white varietals available on the menu. Looking for a Pinot Noir to try? Simply tap the Pinot Noir category to have the app present all of the available selections in that category. The wine list can then be sorted by name, vintage, region, varietal or price. When you see a wine you are interested in, you can tap it to view more details. The details screen provides a customer with information about the wine such as the manufacturer’s label and tasting notes, as well as an opportunity for the Galaxy Restaurant to offer their own tasting notes and food pairing suggestions. By tapping the “add” button, you can place the wine in the “your menu selections” for your server to order.
The Wine App also offers customers an opportunity to view other drinks The Galaxy Restaurant has to offer, such as beer, whiskey, and bourbon in addition to martinis and other signature drinks. A dessert menu is also available in the app.
“There are a variety of native iPad apps available in the marketplace that offer similar functionality to the Galaxy Wine App; however, The Galaxy wanted to have something more customized and tailored to their needs” says Victor Howe, Director of WebRiver Interactive. “Additionally, the Wine App is not a native iPad app. It’s developed as a mobile web application, meaning it can run on any tablet, not just the iPad.”
By utilizing the latest mobile web technologies such as HTML5, as well as JQuery, PHP and My SQL, and by carefully designing the interface to function within a tablet environment, WebRiver Interactive was able to provide a neutral platform for the app that can run on any tablet at a fraction of the cost of designing and developing a native iOS and/or Android app.
“The Wine App is indistinguishable from a native iOS app as far as the design and how tightly the interface fits in the iPad. By utilizing some of the newer elements of HTML5 and JQuery, we were able to provide very fluid transitions and movements within the Wine App interface. At a very basic level though, the Wine App is running through a web browser” says Victor Howe.
The ability to offer a sophisticated mobile application, without having to build a native iOS or Android app, can provide companies with a less expensive alternative for taking advantage of the ever growing base of mobile and tablet users. This opportunity offers these users an engaging experience that is customized specifically for a mobile or tablet device.
Future enhancements to the Wine App for the Galaxy Restaurant include video tasting notes and food pairing recommendations from the executive chef, as well as integrating the wine database into other areas of the Galaxy Restaurant web site.
